01 — What we stand for
Three words we have to earn every semester.
Lead
The council represents the most high-functioning leaders of the college and looks forward to leading the student body in reaching greater success.
Empower
We seek to empower members within the council, so they may then lead in empowering their peers and future colleagues, as a representation of the leaders of the Texas A&M College of Arts & Sciences.
02 — The premise
We seek to unify the students, faculty, and administration of the College of Arts and Sciences. SCAS mission statement, 2022
In December 2021, Texas A&M announced A Path Forward — the plan that would bring Liberal Arts, Geosciences and Science together as a single College of Arts & Sciences. The first ideas for a student council were workshopped that same month.
Through the spring of 2022, founders Alexis King and Olivia Lambert wrote the council's mission, purpose and constitution, appointed four vice presidents, and held roundtables with existing councils and with the student body. Bradley Matthews, Associate Director of Career Services, joined as faculty advisor — his seat on the college working group meant the council could take shape alongside the new administration rather than after it.
That May, the College of Arts & Sciences Working Group wrote to Student Activities in support of SCAS as the official student council for the new college. Recognition followed that fall, along with the first officer team and the first membership class.
